Knit Hearts to be my Valentine – Free pattern

by Doreen Blask
Oops, It’s Valentine’s again ๐ There’s always something I seem to forget when it comes to holidays.

I have the perfect last minute gift for you that will make you and everyone you gift it to very happy. They look good on your bag, with your keys, as a general decoration and will definitely be a great idea for your Valentine. They also make a cute Thank You gift or table decor. I made a whole bunch of these once as wedding favours and for a baby shower, so why only make them for Valentine’s Day?

Oh, and did I mention that they are perfect scrap eaters? ๐ But knowing me you knew that already, didnโt you? (See more ideas for Scrap projects here)
This is the basic recipe for a simple knit heart. You can use all of your smallest scraps of leftover yarn for these and they will look great and make a beautiful gift for everyone. You can knit these hearts in any size you like, to fit your amount of leftovers.
I’ve had this pattern on Ravelry for a while now but thought it might be a nice idea for all of you who are not on Ravelry (for whatever reason ๐ It’s free anyway)
Please enjoy this free pattern from me to you!

Techniques used:
- knit in the round on double pointed needles
- basic increases and decreases (m1r/m1l, k2tog, ssk).
- kitchener stitch / grafting
The gauge is not important, but you should use needles at least one size smaller than indicated on the yarn to prevent the fiberfill from showing.
What you need:
- a total of ~ 3-5grams of fingering yarn (or a little more of any other yarn!) in your favourite colour/s
- 5 double pointed needles (2,5 โ 3,5mm)
- Tapestry needle
- Fiberfill
Abbreviations:
- CO = Cast on
- St = Stitch
- Rd = Round
- m1r = make 1st right leaning from the st UNDER the next st (increase 1st) like this

- m1l = make 1st left leaning from the st UNDER the last knitted stitch (increase 1st)
- k = Knit
- k2tog = Knit two stitches together, decreasing one stitch.
- ssk = slip one stitch as if to knit, slip another stitch as if to knit, stick point of left needle in two slipped stitches in front of the right needle and knit.
Knit the heart:
CO 8st in any colour and close to rd.
Rd1 (and every odd rd): k
Rd2: [k1, m1l, k2, m1r, k1] x2 (12st)
Rd4: [k1, m1l, k4, m1r, k1] x2 (16st)
Rd6: [k1, m1l, k6, m1r, k1] x2 (20st)
Rd8: [k1, m1l, k8, m1r, k1] x2 (24st)
If you want your heart to be bigger, just continue increasing st in the same manner, until you’re satisfied with the size.(The hearts in the picture use 48st in total)
Rd9-19: k
if you increased to more st, you might want to add some rows here, too (2 per added increase should do).
Distribute all st evenly on 4 needles. (=6st per needle if you didn’t increase to more st)
Knit only the st on needle 1 and needle 4 in the round:
Rd20: k
Rd21: [ssk, k2, k2tog] x2 (8st)
Rd22-23: k
close seam using grafting/kitchener stitch. Weave in loose ends.
Stuff heart
Re-attach yarn to the remaining stitches on needles 2 and 3 and repeat as for the first half of the stitches Rd 20-23.
Close hole in the middle and add a litte loop (i-cord or crochet, as you prefer) to hang on a mobile or use it without loop as decoration. Or add them to your knitted toys like for Sally the Squirrel ๐

Have fun knitting! ๐

I’m so glad you like it and I hope to see yours soon!
Do you think these could be done with magic loop?
They are sooooo cute!
I don’t see why not! I must confess I’ve never tried magic loop. Maybe it’s about time!
Thank you!
