After socking it for the biggest part of this year I am finally ready for something new. So when I was reading Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythoogy this summer I got inspired to design a set of patterns inspired by the characters of these stories.

So I wrote and knitted, ribbed, knitted again, annoyed my test knitters (I love you ladies, you know that!! Right??) and finally had my first set of patterns ready to show.

The Jormungandr Socks and Mittens (click for patterns on Ravelry)

The first one I would like to present to you is Jormungandr, the mighty sea serpent that encompasses Midgard (our world), biting its own tail. She is one of the three children of Loki, god of mischief, and she will be there in the end of the world, Ragnarok, when she releases her tail and leaves the water of the sea.

With the snaking and winding braids in this pattern and the colour of the ocean I think these might do her a little justice at least. What do you think? The yarn I used for the socks is Cascade Heritage. 

I don’t know which I love more, the socks or the mittens, but for sure I am in love with the combination of cables, colour and yarn. This is my first time knitting with Cascade Sorata and I am stoked by the softness of it, but what else would you expect of 70% Baby Lama and 30% Silk?

Then I had another idea: What if instead of just one set of patterns for socks and matching fingerless mittens I make four? And what if with each release I’d host a grand GIVEAWAY for readers of this blog? Oh YEAH!

So I will be releasing a series of three more Norse patterns in the coming months to keep you busy in autumn and winter. Each being accompanied by… And even crazier idea: What If I show you different makers of things to create a truely stunning set of matching beauty? It doesn’t always have to be just yarn and patterns, right?

The coolest (and sometimes most frustrating) thing about being a designer is that I get to do everything myself. I am not a professional photographer but I really love testing new angles and trying fun poses with my models. It was a lot of fun going out on a photoshoot with my friend Ipshita, who is a storyteller and dancer. I am incredibly thankful that I am blessed with friends who support me and cheer me on, and even lend a hand (or feet) for my photos. You will for sure see more of her here, soon!

About the patterns:

Jormungandr is the mighty sea serpent that encompasses Midgard (our world), biting its own tail. She is on of the three children of Loki, god of mischief, and she will be there in the end of the world, Ragnarok, when she releases her tail and leaves the water of the sea.

These socks and fingerless mittens with their winding braids are a fabulous combination of mystic pattern and beautiful form. They look best when made from solid or semi solid yarns.
Charts and written instructions for variations in sizes are included for both patterns.

This patterns are suitable for knitters with some experience.

Techniques used are:
– knitting and purling in the round
– simple decreases
– knitting cables

What you need:

• ~100g sock yarn (depending on size), for example Cascade Yarns Heritage (400m /100g) or similar in your favourite colourway (sample in the pictures is #5720 Deep Ocean)
• 5double pointed needles (or circular needle) 2.5 or 3mm
• stitch markers
• Tapestry needle to sew in ends
