New pattern: Jormungandr Mitts and Socks + Giveaway
After socking it for the biggest part of this year I am finally ready for something new. So when I was reading Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythoogy this summer I got inspired to design a set of patterns inspired by the characters of these stories.
So I wrote and knitted, ribbed, knitted again, annoyed my test knitters (I love you ladies, you know that!! Right??) and finally had my first set of patterns ready to show.
The Jormungandr Socks and Mittens (click for patterns on Ravelry)
The first one I would like to present to you is Jormungandr, the mighty sea serpent that encompasses Midgard (our world), biting its own tail. She is one of the three children of Loki, god of mischief, and she will be there in the end of the world, Ragnarok, when she releases her tail and leaves the water of the sea.
With the snaking and winding braids in this pattern and the colour of the ocean I think these might do her a little justice at least. What do you think? The yarn I used for the socks is Cascade Heritage.
I don’t know which I love more, the socks or the mittens, but for sure I am in love with the combination of cables, colour and yarn. This is my first time knitting with Cascade Sorata and I am stoked by the softness of it, but what else would you expect of 70% Baby Lama and 30% Silk?
Then I had another idea: What if instead of just one set of patterns for socks and matching fingerless mittens I make four? And what if with each release I’d host a grand GIVEAWAY for readers of this blog? Oh YEAH!
So I will be releasing a series of three more Norse patterns in the coming months to keep you busy in autumn and winter. Each being accompanied by… And even crazier idea: What If I show you different makers of things to create a truely stunning set of matching beauty? It doesn’t always have to be just yarn and patterns, right?
That was when I found Meike of Nadelmikado. The maker of the prettiest project bags I have seen so far and I knew this was love on first sight. She found some great fabrics to match my series of sets and will have a limited edition of these ready for YOU with each release of patterns! And not enough with this, you’ll also be able to WIN some of her bags and more (read ONNNN!)
If you are a newsletter subscriber for this blog you have already received exclusive coupon codes for the Jormungandr Set of patterns and also for Meike’s project bags that were exclusively made for this release. It is a limited edition of 6 bags in total, so hurry if you want to grab one! (and sign up for the newsletter so that you don’t miss the next chance!). I will present Maike to you in an interview later this month!
The coolest (and sometimes most frustrating) thing about being a designer is that I get to do everything myself. I am not a professional photographer but I really love testing new angles and trying fun poses with my models. It was a lot of fun going out on a photoshoot with my friend Ipshita, who is a storyteller and dancer. I am incredibly thankful that I am blessed with friends who support me and cheer me on, and even lend a hand (or feet) for my photos. You will for sure see more of her here, soon!

Oh, my. I love the turquoise color in both your knitting and the bag.
thank you! I love ocean colours, so obviously this had to go with it 🙂
what a nice idea! You always find so lovely things one might very much wish to have! Maybe I should finally try cables – it’s mitt-time anyway.
My favorite colour to knit with would as usually be a variant of purple, maybe one of the malabrigo-arroyo balls in my stash. Or violett? Or red maybe? Or all of them? There is too much lovely wool in my boxes…
All the best and have a really good and untroubled weekend!
Thank you, Monika! I would still love to see your stash once 🙂 Kisses from Bagis
Whenever you are near Hamburg there will be a cake for you! And maybe time to knit together…
oooh yess!!! Save a seat for me around Christmas!
I love your new pattern. If I win the giveaway I would like the red & black bag and blue yarn. THANKS for this opportunity.
I’m so glad you lilke it! Fingers crossed!!
So lovely patterns and I love your color. I would cast on with similar color. The project bag in purple would be perfect
I already order your newsletter 👍🏻.
Thank you!! I’m very glad you like it!
I would choose the blue bag and yarn because it is so sharp.
Fingers crossed, then!!
Beautiful work! I am partial to purple color ways for knitting but the blue/black bag is my favorite
thanks so much!! Good luck to you!
Ohhh I want turquoise socks and that teal bag! Sooo pretty!!!!!
:))) I couldn’t possibly choose which one I like best. Fingers crossed for you!
WHOA! What an awesome surprise and so generous of you both!
I’ve been sneaky peeking at the test knits so this would be wonderful!
ok, seeing as DD2 has finally moved back to our colder climes I know she’d love a pair of mitts in Thistledown and such a shame she doesn’t knit…. oh well…guess I’d get to go with one of the blue bags..heh.
As an aside…Celtic bag and the wee froggies are faved on Meike’s shop..they’re both gorgeous and of course with the required zips. 😉
Thank you, that’s sweet of you, and so sneaky to peek in on my tester’s work, hehe 🙂 Bestest of luck to you!!
Red Violet for the Cascade Sorata and any one of the black-bottomed Nadelmikado bags.
I definitely need these in Cascade ‘Bluestone’. And I need to make at least two pairs of each as my daughter will ‘borrow’ them – permanently. Lol.
The Hellblau knitting bag is beautiful!!
Ha! I know that problem… One pair is always gone somehow… 🙂
I would use Deep Ocean in the Cascade Hertiage for the socks. I would use Scarlet in the Cascade Sorata for the mitts.
hmmm scarlet must look nice, too! I’ll have to try it! Ggood luck to you!
I am drawn to the blue black and grey project bag. In it i would love to find the scarlet yarn to knit the patterns. Thanks for the opportunity to win these.
the red trimmed bag is my fav, it pops so well against the design of the bag. I love color. I also love cascade, I would make the mitts in cascade 220 100 % wool I have in my stash it is medium darker tone blue. Perfect for this. thx for having a contest. your patterns are lovely.
thank you for your comment and good luck to you!
These are beautiful! I love pinks and purple, so either of the bags with those colors are my first choice. Red Violet is a beautiful colorway in this yarn!
thank you so much! Good luck to you!
Love the socks and mitts and since I’ve recently decided mitts are not the useless accessory that I previously thought they were, I’d love to knit yours in charcoal Cascade Sorata and store them in the black and silver Nadelmikado bag while I’m working on them.
sounds like a plan! Careful, mitts are so addictive!! Fingers crossed for you!
Dear Doreen, it’s such a beautiful pattern and it looks so pretty in any color 😍
I would knit the set in a beautiful pink, I have someone in mind who would really be happy about it.
The little bags are so lovely in all colors! Because I love lobe love blue, I’d chose the blue one.
Thank you for the possibility to win this nice set!
Thank you, Ursula! Crossing all available fingers for you!
I would choose the green colour (Peridot 19) of Cascade Sorata yarn and dark blue project bag. Thank you for this opportunity!
thanks so much! Good luck!
What a lovely offer! I would cast on in the grey yarn because I prefer cables in soft natural colourways. And, given a choice, I’d prefer the turquoise and black square Celtic knot pattern on the project bag you show with your lovely patterns.
thank you! Good luck!
I would make this set in a dark pink/magenta. Love knitting cables :-). As for the bag, I love the one with the pink zip
Oh, I’m torn between the Antique Moss and the Fawn…lovely colors, all of them. And the Celtic bag is fantastic!
I’m in love with the Scarlet color 🙂 And the Celtic knot bag is absolutely stunning!!
Hi Mrs. Mumpitz, I love your mitts and socks design very much. It’s difficult to choose a colour, they are all great. But If I’m lucky and win I would love the turquoise colour. Nadelmikado’s project bags a a real treat. Thanks and love from Switzerland.
Ohhhh the turquoise yarn is my choice! Love the way it shows off your new patterns. Also would choose the bag pattern the gloves hand is holding, turquoise and black print.
CONGRATULATIONS! You won the package!
I love your give away, would love to start knitting right away with the dusky teal color way, the project bag in the teal/ celtic knot is lovely!
Oh my! What a beautiful pattern! I think it would be perfect fall knitting. It’s so stunning in the blue, but I think a nice sap green would be right up my alley. And the Celtic knotwork has such a nice pattern, but barring that the bag with the mint green zip seems quite cheerful, too!
thank you so much! Good luck for the drawing!
I would probably pick the turquoise to knit with first tho they are all beautiful and it would be hard to choose!! Your design is absolutely amazingly gorgeous!!! LOVE IT! 😍
I LOVE the black and teal project bag above!! 💙
Congrats on finishing your hubbies’ Advent socks ahead of schedule! YAY you!!! 😁
I love the cables on the bag in the “Win Me” photo too! All of the bags are beautiful and would be well used and loved!! Thank you for the chance to win one 😗
I am absolutely amazed that you knit so many beautiful socks. I definitely want to sign up for a chance to win your prize. I love the colour purple for yarn and purple for the extra gift. I also love knitting socks and absolutely love Opal yarn. NOt sure if this is the correct place to enter for your giveaway prize. You inspire me to get knitting more socks. I am Cdn living on a small island so not always easy to shop – do it mostly by mail. thank you Corinne
Thank you! I entered you in the pot and wish ou good luck and happy sock knitting!
I love your choice of colours and all the options are lovely! I would probably opt for dusky teal yarn and the bag closest in colour to that, but it is tough to decide on just one!
Thank you! Fingers crossed for you!
I love that book, and the patterns look great and go well with it! I would choose the Bluestone yarn and the bag with the darkest blue (the middle one in the stack).
thank you! Best of luck to you!
Such a lovely pattern and sweet offer! I would knit these for my 14-year old, who went through a rough patch the past year and who is currently reading Norse Mythology and loving it.
I think she would prefer Antique Moss (18). As for the beautiful project bags – the light blue one certainly caught my eye 🙂
Thank you for designing and being such an inspiration!
thank you, that’s very sweet of you! All the best for your not-so-little-one and good luck!
Oh, my…so difficult to choose a color but the teal is gorgeous for the yarn and I love the blue bag!
